On January 25, 2010, before signing a formal collaboration agreement between MIT and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), then-MIT President Susan Hockfield said, “Our role will be extensive and direct. MIT faculty will be involved at every stage, from developing new curricula to helping with early deployment, assisting with mentoring, career development programs, and conducting major joint research projects. We also look forward to numerous opportunities for student exchanges and collaborations.” Five years later, that vision has come to fruition.

In 1755, a major earthquake shook the Boston area, toppling chimneys and inspiring sermons and poems about the wrath of God, such as Earthquakes the Works of God and Tokens of his Just Displeasure and The Duty of a People, Under Dark Providences. The quake, whose epicenter was about 25 miles from Cape Anne and 50 miles out to sea from Boston, measured an estimated 6.0 to 6.3 on the Richter scale. Since then, Bostonians have not had to worry much about the ground beneath them. In fact, preparing for earthquakes is probably near the bottom of the city’s to do list. But what if another major earthquake were to strike? According to SUTD-MIT postdoctoral fellow Ornella Iuorio, it would not be good.

In this program (SWAP@MIT for short), undergraduates from SUTD come to MIT during the January Independent Activities Period (IAP) to experience the MIT academic culture, build connections with MIT students, and gain lifelong skills for their future academic and professional careers. In the inaugural 2015 program, funding from SUTD made possible 23 new and expanded IAP offerings, which were attended by both MIT and SUTD students.

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) celebrated its move, from its interim campus of three years at Dover Drive, to its brand new campus in the Changi Business Park at 8 Somapah Road today. SUTD will be the first Singapore public university to be located in the east of Singapore. SUTD students and staff brought convoys of buses and pop-up trucks - six vehicles in total - to various schools across the island, to inform them of the move and provide prospective students the opportunity to experience what the university is about.

SUTD Professor Sai-Kit Yeung has spent the last year at MIT as part of the MIT-SUTD Faculty Development Program, also known as Teach the Teachers. Through the program, Prof. Yeung is experiencing the academic culture of MIT and conducting research under the mentorship of Prof. Wojciech Matusik in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). He supervises a team of researchers whose work could eventually change many aspects of everyday life. From 3-D printed clothing to super high-resolution photographs and computers that can suggest interior design solutions, this group’s projects build on their individual strengths in creative ways.
